I've installed my share of GFCI outlets (Leviton, Cooper, Pass and Seymour, and sundry contractor packs) over the years, and they all seemed to work fine for me. This Leviton is no exception. I replaced builder-installed GFCIs when i noticed that the builder installed a 15amp main GFCI on a 20amp/12ga romex circuit. This 20amp GFCI fixed the problem of occasional tripping in remote bathrooms.

For new construction, I recommend GFCI breakers at the main panel so that the GFCI circuit integrity remains through remodeling. But local GFCIs work fine too as long as no one messes up the wiring. These Leviton GFCIs have a circuit testor built into the fault indicator to protect against this - a nice feature. If the LINE and LOAD wires accidentally get crossed, the indicator won't light up and the circuit won't work - that's a good clue for even the inexperienced that something is wrong.

The Leviton has 4 clearly marked wire terminal pairs on the back - 2 @ both LINE and LOAD, to allow you to create downstream GFCI and non-GFCI branches. A circuit tester together with the built-in LED indicates that the GFCI is operating normally. I would prefer LED illumination to indicate fault rather than normal operation indicators, but that's not the way Leviton does it. Instructions are abundantly clear.

The rear terminals are "plug" type so you plug a straight wire in the hole and tighten the screw which tightens the plate which holds the wire end against the contact. Don't confuse this system with the "plug" type recepticals that do not have a tightening screw - the latter are prohibited by many local codes. The system used in this GFCI holds the wires as tightly as the old-fashioned "loop, insert under wire, and tighten" systems.

Remember that the 7899-W has an LED indicator light that remains illuminated under normal usage. There is a newer model, the Leviton N7899-W that has the more traditional red and black test/reset buttons and a thinner profile. I haven't used this newer model as yet.
